ACCOMMODATION REGISTRATION · OFTEN MISSED

Where You Sleep Must Be Registered

The rule: every foreign visitor's overnight address must be registered with police — within 24 hours in cities (72h rural). Hotels do it automatically at check-in. Airbnb, friend-stays and informal stays: YOU do it, at the local police station. Skip it and the usual cost is nothing — until it isn't: fines up to ¥2,000 and awkward questions at border exit.

BY SCENARIO · WHO DOES WHAT

Four Scenarios, One Rule

ScenarioWho registersDeadlineIf you skip itNote
Hotel (any licensed property) The hotel — automatic at check-in Done during check-in None for you They scan your passport and file it. Zero action needed — this is 90% of travellers.
Airbnb / short-term rental YOU (or the host — but often neither knows) 24h in cities, 72h in rural areas Fines up to ¥2,000 (rarely enforced on tourists, but real) THE classic trap. Hosts routinely tell guests "no registration needed" — they are wrong. See how-to below.
Staying with friends / family YOU, at the local police station (派出所) 24h (city) / 72h (rural) of arrival Same fine range; usually a warning first Your host accompanies you with their ID + household registration (户口) or lease. Takes ~15 minutes.
Couchsurfing / informal stays YOU — same police-station process Same 24h/72h Same Non-negotiable if you stay overnight; border officers DO check stamps at exit and can ask for proof of registered addresses.

HOW-TO · DIY REGISTRATION

Registering Yourself (5 Steps, ~15 Minutes)

  1. 1

    Find your local police station

    Key term: 派出所 (pàichūsuǒ)

Every district has one. Ask your host, or search 派出所 + district name in Amap (the maps app everyone uses here — Google Maps is unreliable in China).

  2. 2

    Bring the documents

Your passport + visa/entry stamp page; your host's ID card; ideally the lease or property certificate. Host should come along the first time.

  3. 3

    Fill the temporary residence form

    Key term: 境外人员临时住宿登记表

Station staff handle it — they type your passport details into the national system. You sign. Done in 10–15 minutes.

  4. 4

    Keep the receipt

They hand you a printed registration form (住宿登记凭证). Photograph it. If police or border officers ever ask — or if you need a visa extension anywhere later — this piece of paper matters.

  5. 5

    Re-register when you change cities

Each new overnight address in a new district needs its own registration. Moving hotels? Automatic. Moving Airbnbs? You do it again.

FAQ

Frequently Asked

Do I really need to register if I'm just visiting a friend for a few nights?

Yes — the rule covers where you sleep, not why. City stays: within 24h; rural: 72h. In practice enforcement on short-stay tourists is light, but the exit stamp check is real, and unregistered Airbnb stays are the #1 cause of questions at the border on the way out.

My Airbnb host says no registration is needed. Are they right?

No. Hosts say this constantly because THEY don't want the paperwork (licensed short-term rental requires permits they may not have). The obligation is yours as the guest. Register yourself at the local 派出所 — it is free, fast, and protects you.

What happens if I don't register?

Range: nothing (most common) → warning → fine up to ¥2,000 (≈US$280). The bigger practical risks: complications at border exit if asked for address proof, and any future visa application that needs clean records. Not worth the gamble for a 15-minute errand.

Does my hotel register me automatically?

Yes — every licensed hotel/hostel files foreign-guest registrations at check-in as a legal requirement. If a "hotel" does NOT take your passport at check-in, it is likely an unlicensed property: that is your red flag to self-register.

I'm on the 240-hour transit — do I still need to register?

Yes, same rules. Transit visitors staying in hotels get registered automatically; transit + Airbnb = same police-station process. The 24h clock starts when you arrive at the address, not when you entered the country.

Is there an app for this?

Some cities (Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen) let hosts or hotels file via police mini-programs, and a few have foreigner self-service portals — availability changes by city. The universal fallback is always the physical police station. Ask your host to check the local 派出所 WeChat account.
