The Route, Day by Day

D0 · Day 0 — arrival day

Land at PVG, activate eSIM, first metro ride

— Immigration: look for the "240-hour transit" counter sign; hand passport + onward ticket + arrival card. Face + fingerprints, ~15 min at off-peak
— The 240h clock starts at 00:00 TOMORROW — so a D0 evening arrival still gives you the full 10 days (see how the clock works)
— Buy a transport card at the service counter or use Alipay transit QR directly (bind card before you fly — guide at the real-name & limits page)
— Maglev (magnetic-levitation airport train) to Longyang Rd (¥50 ≈ US$7, 8 min) then Metro Line 2 to the city — faster than taxi at rush hour

D1 · Days 1–2 — Shanghai

The Bund, Yu Garden, and the payment learning curve

— Set up Alipay + WeChat Pay with your foreign card on D0 evening; test with a convenience-store purchase before relying on it
— Foreign cards work at chain stores and metro; street stalls and small restaurants are cash or Chinese cards only — carry ¥300–500 (≈US$42–70) cash buffer
— Yu Garden at opening time (09:00) before tour buses; Bund lights after 19:00
— Museum days need advance booking via WeChat mini-program — a local friend or hotel front desk can book for you

D2 · Days 3–5 — Xi'an

Overnight-bullet to Xi'an, Terracotta Army, Muslim Quarter

— Shanghai→Xi'an North high-speed rail ~6h (2nd class ~¥515 ≈ US$72, book via Trip.com or 12306 — our passport-on-12306 guide covers the verification pitfalls)
— Terracotta Army: book the timed slot online, go early, hire the audio guide — the site is huge
— Muslim Quarter food street: cash-friendly, card-averse. This is where your ¥ cash buffer earns its keep
— Xi'an city wall by bike at sunset (~¥54, card OK at the gate)

D4 · Days 6–8 — Shenzhen

Bullet to Shenzhen, tech city, border preview

— Xi'an→Shenzhen North ~9h; or fly ~2.5h if the schedule is tight — compare door-to-door, not air-time
— Shenzhen is the fully-cardless city — even street food takes QR. Good place to stress-test your foreign-card setup
— Shenzhen Bay port area: walkable waterfront; the actual HK crossing happens tomorrow

D8 · Days 9–10 — exit via Hong Kong

West Kowloon exit: the 240h finale

— Shenzhen Futian→West Kowloon high-speed rail ~15 min, or metro to West Kowloon via the land port
— At West Kowloon, mainland exit and HK entry happen in the same station (co-location). Have your onward ticket out of HK ready
— Leave a half-day buffer: if a train is missed or a counter is slow, you still exit within 240h — cutting it to the last hours is how people overstay by accident
— The 240h clock: from 00:00 the day after entry — 10 full days. If you entered on a Monday evening, you must be out by the following Thursday 23:59-ish. Re-check the rule at the tracker before you book

Do I need a visa for this exact route?

No — if your passport is on the eligible list and you enter at Shanghai Pudong with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country (Hong Kong counts). Verify your nationality against the live tracker before booking.

Why Hong Kong and not back to my origin country?

The transit rule requires travel between two DIFFERENT third countries/regions. In-from-HK, out-to-Bangkok clearly qualifies. Entering and exiting to the SAME country (e.g. US → China → US) is the pattern airlines and border officers question most — some carriers deny boarding over it. Exiting via Hong Kong or Macau (counted as separate regions) is the cleanest, most common pattern.

What happens if I overstay the 240 hours?

Overstay is a recordable violation: fines, possible detention, and future visa-free access at risk. Build the half-day exit buffer into Day 10 — do not schedule the exit flight for the same afternoon your transit expires.

Can I do this route in reverse (HK → Shanghai → out)?

Yes, symmetric. The common pattern is HK-in via West Kowloon, exit at PVG to a third country. Port eligibility is the same list.

Is ¥3,000 (≈US$420) enough for 10 days besides hotels?
