Buying China Train Tickets as a Foreigner
As of 2026-09-12: China's high-speed rail (G/D trains, 250–350 km/h) is sold mainly through 12306 — the official ticketing system of China Railway (think of it as their Amtrak.com, app-first). Foreign visitors have four buying channels; the easiest is Trip.com (full English, no setup), the cheapest is 12306 itself after a one-time passport verification (外籍护照核验 — an identity check against the immigration database). Once booked, your passport is your ticket: scan it at the fare gate, no printing needed. Channel details below are marked pending until re-verified.

Register an account
On the 12306 app or website, register with email/phone. CRITICAL: set the ID type to 护照 (passport) — selecting the wrong type is the #1 registration failure.

Passport verification (the gate)
12306 runs a one-time identity check against the immigration database (我的 → 实名核验). Officially "within 24h", usually faster, longer at peak. Do this DAYS before travel. Official announcement linked below.

Add passenger
Enter your name EXACTLY as printed on the passport bio page — middle names, hyphens, order all matter. Name mismatch is the #2 failure cause.

Search & book
Tickets open ~15 days ahead (14–17 varies). Peak trains sell out in minutes; have 2–3 departure options ready. 二等座 (2nd class) is the default choice.

Pay
12306 payment historically needs a Chinese card; international users succeed via Alipay/WeChat channels or book Trip.com instead. See our Alipay guide (linked below).

Board
No paper ticket at major stations — scan your passport at the fare gate (passport reader slot, usually left side of the gate stack). Arrive 20+ min early the first time.

5 Common Failures & Fixes

1. Verification stuck on "processing" for days
Happens when the name or ID type does not match the immigration database record exactly.
Fix:Re-check ID type = passport and exact name spelling. Still stuck? Book via Trip.com (no verification) or a station counter with your passport.

2. Name rejected as "invalid format"
Accented characters, reversed name order, or extra spaces all trigger this.
Fix:Copy the MRZ-line spelling from the passport bio page. Müller → Muller. Hyphens and spaces count.

3. Wrong ID type selected at registration
Defaults to Chinese ID; foreign users miss the dropdown.
Fix:Cannot be changed — register a new account with 护照 (passport). Painless, the old account has no history.

4. Peak-season sellout
Golden Week / Chinese New Year trains vanish in under a minute.
Fix:Use 12306 waitlist (候补) — it works well; or split the journey at an intermediate hub; or check Trip.com inventory.

5. Passport won't scan at the fare gate
Worn passports and the gate's reader angle are the usual culprits.
Fix:Go to the staffed lane (人工通道) beside the gates — manual scan. Do not keep re-swiping; the gate locks after a few tries.
