A wandering elephant seal was found and saved by marine experts in Canada at the edge of a bustling BC highway.
A report of an elephant seal in an embankment by the road prompted Saanich police to call a rescue crew from Fisheries and Oceans Canada to the side of the Trans-Canada Highway.
The seal was moved to Colquitz Creek nearby by DFO staff and police officers who came to the scene.
The seal, which probably weighed around 250 to 285 pounds, was likely shedding its fur on land when it got scared by people and their unleashed dogs walking nearby.
Once the seal was back in the creek area, off-leash dogs kept bothering it. Mandy Ludlow, who is a DFO officer and the detachment commander for southern Vancouver Island, said they have requested animal control to increase patrols in the area to safeguard the seal and other animals that are shedding their fur there.
