‘I was stunned.’ This family of five was already related, meaning the parents are cousins. They found this out after taking a DNA test to learn more about their family history.
The US couple had been in a relationship for 17 years and married for over 10 years.
Celina Quinones shared her news on TikTok and it’s been watched over 4.4 millions times since it was uploaded back in March. The reactions have been varied.
“There’s a lot of negative comments, it’s awful,” Celina said. “People keep asking, ‘Why would you do that? Why would you post this?’ But I take everything with a pinch of salt. I’m a realtor, so I’m used to getting harassed all the time, so I’m like, ah, it’s nothing.”
After dating for a few months, Celina married Joseph Quinones in July 2006. When their families met, no one realized the two were related. Through all the time, events, birthdays, and other family time, no one knew.
“We ended up having our wedding, and even then, our grandmas seemed to be very similar, and they got along, but still, nothing clicked,” she recalls. Husband Joseph added: “We didn’t think about it. I never saw her at family reunions, funerals, or weddings.”
It wasn’t until Celina started putting together a family tree and took DNA tests through MyHeritage about a decade later that they started to discover the truth. They were about to be shocked.
“I ordered the DNA tests,” says Celina. “They came in, and sure enough, we did our swabs, put them in the mail, and off they went. Then we got the results back, and I searched the family tree DNA — another part of the search — and saw him pop up there. And I go, ‘Oh no.’”
