LAND CROSSINGS · PRACTICAL INTEL
Crossing Into China by Land
The land borders travellers actually use: Hong Kong ↔ Shenzhen (four crossings), Macau ↔ Zhuhai, and Vietnam ↔ Yunnan. All are open to foreign passports, most are 240-hour-transit eligible, and each has a personality — queue patterns, transport links, and traps. Pick by your route, not by accident.
THE CROSSINGS · SIX PORTS THAT MATTER
The Crossings
| Port | Border | 240h transit | Hours | Queue (typical) | When to pick it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| West Kowloon (西九龙) | Hong Kong ↔ Shenzhen/Beijing (HSR) | Yes — co-located immigration | First/last HSR departures (~07:00–23:00) | 10–25 min typical | THE cleanest 240h entry/exit: mainland and HK border control in one station. Book HSR through-trains to/from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou. |
| Lo Wu / Luohu (罗湖) | Hong Kong ↔ Shenzhen (metro) | Yes | ~06:30–24:00 (with MTR) | 15–45 min, brutal at rush hour | Cheap and frequent; connects to Shenzhen metro. Avoid weekday 17:00–19:00 like the plague. |
| Futian (福田) | Hong Kong ↔ Shenzhen (HSR + metro) | Yes | ~06:30–22:30 | 10–30 min | Newer, calmer than Lo Wu. Futian checkpoint building connects to both MTR and metro lines. |
| Shenzhen Bay (深圳湾) | Hong Kong ↔ Shenzhen (bus/car) | Yes | ~06:00–24:00 | 10–30 min | One-building clearance for buses. Good for airport runs (closest to SZX). |
| Gongbei (拱北) | Macau ↔ Zhuhai (walking) | Yes | ~06:00–01:00 | 20–60 min, worst on weekends | The Macau exit route. Massive hall, follow signs for foreign-passport lanes; e-channels are for card holders only. |
| Hekou (河口) | Vietnam (Lào Cai) ↔ Yunnan | Yes | ~08:00–17:00 (local variations) | 5–20 min | The overland Vietnam route into Kunming/Yunnan. Border closes at night — do not arrive late. |
CROSSING TIPS · WHAT ACTUALLY GOES WRONG
Five Tips From the Queue
Have your onward proof ready — on paper
Land borders ask LESS than airlines, but 240h entries here still need your third-country ticket. A printed copy ends the conversation; a dead phone battery starts one.
Foreign passports use staffed lanes
The e-channel (自助通道) gates are for registered frequent crossers with Chinese-issued cards. Look for 外国人/人工 signs — staffed booths. Queue looks longer, moves fine.
The arrival card matters
You will fill a paper arrival/departure card at land ports (flights usually do it digitally). Keep the departure half — losing it means a form re-fill and questions at exit.
Cash for the first hour
Land-side transport at border points: metro takes Alipay/WeChat QR (set up before you fly), but the convenience stores and some taxis at crossing plazas want cash or local QR. ¥100 buffer covers you.
Do not cross back the same day casually
In-out-in same-day patterns at HK land borders attract attention on ANY visa status. If you are on 240h transit, a same-day re-entry restarts nothing — it can invalidate the transit logic entirely. Stay the night.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
Can I enter China through a land border on the 240-hour transit?
Yes — at designated ports. West Kowloon (rail, from HK), Lo Wu/Futian/Shenzhen Bay (HK land), Gongbei (Macau), and Hekou (Vietnam) are the ones travellers actually use. The full 65-port list is on our 240h tracker. Air entry remains the least questioned.
Which HK–Shenzhen crossing should I pick?
HSR traveller with luggage: West Kowloon. On a budget, light pack: Lo Wu. Rush hour or want calm: Futian. Heading to the airport or by bus: Shenzhen Bay. Queues at all of them spike 17:00–19:00 weekdays and Sunday evenings.
Is there a fee to cross?
No border fee. You pay for transport: MTR to Lo Wu/Futian (~HK$40–50 from Central), HSR West Kowloon→Shenzhen North (~HK$80), buses vary. Nothing is charged at immigration itself.
How long does immigration take at these crossings?
Our planning numbers: 10–30 min off-peak at Futian/Shenzhen Bay; 15–45 at Lo Wu; 20–60 at Gongbei on weekends. First-time foreigner fingerprinting adds ~5 min. These are public-report figures — our own timed runs will replace them (watch the badge).
Can I do a visa run to Hong Kong and come back?
Depends on status: on a proper visa, yes (each entry is its own stay). On 240h transit — no, that is not what transit means and officers treat it accordingly. On 30-day visa-free, same-day returns are legal but frequency patterns get scrutinised like anywhere.
What about the Vietnam or Laos land borders?
Hekou (Lào Cai) is the established Vietnam→Yunnan route, 240h-eligible. Laos crossings (Boten/Mohan) also appear on port lists — popular with the Kunming–Luang Prabang overland crowd. Verify your specific crossing against the official 65-port list before committing.
